Buttermilk Spa Acupuncture FAQ

FAQ's
Do the needles hurt?
The needles are hair-like sized and absolutely nothing like the hypodermic needles one experiences at a medical doctor's office. We work with a gentle style of insertion and look to the patient to set the pace. You may feel a charge of energy emanating from the point where the needle was inserted, or heat, or tingling or a deep, grounding sensation. This soon brings you to a relaxed state of mind and body. The needles can be adjusted if any sensation is too strong as a deep feeling of tranquility is what we intend for the patient to experience.

Needle phobic? You won't be after a treatment starts!

How many needles are used?
That varies with regards to patient, the condition treated and the style of acupuncture used. However, we look to use the least amount of needles possible, preferring to work with the patient, not just from set protocols. Accurate selection of specific acupuncture points, intention and placement are the keys to an excellent treatment.

Do I have to be sick to benefit from acupuncture?
Absolutely not. One of the best ways to use acupuncture is for maintaining your health. The change of seasons can be challenging to our health, and getting acupuncture is one way to prevent illness.

Do you get seasonal allergies, or do you have a tendency towards cold and flu in winter? Schedule an acupuncture appointment just before this period for treatment. You'll build up your immunity at a moment when you're not in a health crisis. Of course, acupuncture during your allergy season is extremely effective as well.

Stress
Many people visit regularly for stress relief treatments, or general "tune-ups" to prevent illness. All of this creates a foundation of continued wellness for years to come.

Psycho-emotional and spiritual challenges
Do you face certain psycho-emotional challenges – such as your ability to deal with stress, anxieties, fears? Do you have a tendency to over-think and over-worry? Does this hinder your ability carry on every day life, relating to friends and family?

Acupuncture is extremely effective to help unblock these obstacles. Our thoughts, our experiences - such as cumulative stress, emotional shock or trauma, grief - are all stored in our body, as energy. If we are mired in depression, anxiety, grief, anger, worry, fear - daily living can feel overwhelming. We may develop physical symptoms, or be more prone to developing illness due to the energetic stress. Acupuncture can help.

What can I expect from an acupuncture treatment?
An initial session is about 1-1/2 hours, and follow-ups range from 45 minutes to an hour. Each session will have some bodywork at the beginning and the end. The bodywork helps you to physically relax, so you can maximize the benefits of the treatment.

After the needles have been inserted, you rest on the table, allowing the needles to do their work. After the treatment, another short round of bodywork helps to integrate this energetic shift into your body.

What conditions are treated with acupuncture?
The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recognize the use of acupuncture and traditional Oriental medicine in the treatment of a wide range of common illnesses. Acupuncture successfully treats both chronic and acute conditions in the categories listed below:
  • Respiratory Disorders, such as common cold and flu, tonsillitis, bronchitis, sinusitis, emphysema, asthma and allergies
  • Gastrointestinal Disorders, such as constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, GERD/gastritis, food allergies, colitis, ulcer and anorexia.
  • Women's Health, including menstrual cramps, PMS, irregular, heavy, or painful menstruation, menopausal symptoms, fibroids, ovarian cysts, birth preparation, IVF preparation, post-partum depression, infertility.
  • Male Health, including benign prostatic hypertrophy, prostatitis, impotence, infertility.
  • Chronic pain
  • Weak Immunity
  • Musculoskeletal issues such as low back, neck, knee, ankle and shoulder pain, sciatica, arthritis, (migraine) headaches,TMJ, neuralgia, sports injuries and carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Emotional and Psychological Disorders, including depression, anxiety, insomnia, stress and chronic fatigue.
  • Circulatory Disorders, such as anemia, hypertension (High Blood Pressure), angina pectoris (chest pain) and arteriosclerosis.
  • Uro-genital Disorders, including stress incontinence, urinary tract infections, and sexual dysfunction.
  • Addictions, such as alcohol, nicotine and drugs
  • Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders

In addition, Therese has received specialized training in acupuncture for the treatment of various eye health conditions, including macular degeneration (both wet and dry) cataracts, retinal detachment, Stargardt's disease, glaucoma. Acupuncture has proven results in this area, and can help treat disorders that western medicine cannot address without serious side-effects.

* *Note: Acupuncture is often effective therapy for other chronic and painful debilitating disorders which have no clear explanation or origin.

What is cosmetic acupuncture?
The goal of MeiZen cosmetic acupuncture is to facilitate a more youthful appearance. This is accomplished two ways: by improving the balance of Qi in your body and by bringing more Qi to your face. Cosmetic acupuncture addresses the internal causes of aging as well as reducing its outward signs.

Following the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Therese uses acupuncture needles to access, manipulate, tonify and balance your body's Qi (or energy). Qi travels through your body along pathways called meridians or channels. The body points chosen will vary from person to person because everyone is unique with differing body types, constitutions and imbalances. This makes the treatment specific to each patient and enhances general health. Everybody receives the same points on the face which makes this the Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture System, a specialized technique to slow and soften the signs of aging on the face.

How many treatments will I need?
This is unique to the individual. Following the initial consultation, follow-up sessions may be scheduled once or twice a week, depending on the severity of the condition. Again, depending on the condition and its severity, treatment may continue weekly for a few times, then bi-weekly, monthly, with perhaps a seasonal tune-up for best health maintenance.

For MeiZen Cosmetic Acupuncture and Group Acupuncture several sessions are recommended to best satisfy the desired outcome. (Appetite control, quit smoking, reduce signs of aging)

Acupuncture is geared towards supporting health and balance, not to create a dependency. Health is a partnership and we encourage our patients to further their treatments with self-care as well, which they can learn from Therese during your sessions.

Save your body, your mind, and your planet.
